![]() ![]() Now if you have a quiver, and one is a pair of super fat powder touring skis, and one is a pair of narrow ski mountaineering skis, maybe bias the wider ones to full mohair for glide in cold snow (and plenty of grip due to large surface area), and the ski mountaineering ones to more nylon for durability and quicker drying in spring snow and more exposed rock.īut that is not where was at, so I think just going with a good 70/30 skin, or, if it truly is just for resort use, full mohair. In short, I don’t think you need to consider location that much. In the past I have heard of glues that did worse in super cold temps, but most glues these days seem to do at least ok in most conditions, and some user actions (like putting skins inside jacket on cold days) can make a big difference there.Īnd all though some areas are colder than others, every single ski area can have some super cold temps at some point in timeĬold dry snow is supposed to be where mohair gets the biggest advantage in glide compared to nylon, but since it’s not any slower in moist snow, I don’t think that’s a huge issue. Heat can mess up the S, come spring time, every region is going to have you skinning up in wet glop sooner or later, so I don’t think region matters much for that. Wax before you go out.once they're wet, it might be too late.Īnd for basic maintenance. I don't wax my skins in the winter, but I'll wax them in the spring. Glue should last for several seasons, just try to keep them clean. You don't need much coverage in your tails. I might be in the minority with G3 skins though.įor sizing, if going with pre-cut, I tend to buy just under the tail's width and if I am in between lengths, I'll go for the shorter one. If I was buying skins for your skis, I would get the G3 minimist at 115mm width and the 172-188 length. Past versions of G3 skins had glue issues, but the ones from the last couple of years are better. I tend to buy G3 though because it is pretty of the cost and availability. G3 has really nice tip and tail clips, but maybe not the performance. ![]() Pomoca is probably the most popular of the big brands. ![]() It comes with G3 skins or can be purchased on its own for 5 bucks. You'll have better glide, and the skins will fold nicely if they are straight, but it is more challenging to use a narrower skin. Otherwise, you can buy to the width of the ski's waist. If you want edge to edge coverage, you'll need to trim your skin. I would stay away from anything that is extra grippy.they don't slide well, and they're very tough on downhills ( and you will encounter the occasional downhill). Everybody seems to learn quickly though, so I don't think there is a need to start on 100% nylon. Generally speaking, mohair is much better on flatter terrain, but it takes a little bit of skill. The 30% nylon helps with durability and a bit of grip. ![]()
